Ghaziabad Couple Suicides After Consuming Poison As Families Cancel Marriage Over Dowry
Ghaziabad, December 2: In a tragic incident, a couple from Uttar Pradesh ‘s Ghaziabad committed suicide after their families called off the marriage allegedly over dowry. According to reports, the couple identified as Subodh Kant and Pooja Singh, consumed poison pill and ended their lives.
Reports inform that the 23-year-old man, who had plans to get married to Pooja, died of multi-organ failure on Saturday while the woman had died on Friday
The report further informs that Pooja’s family accused Sobodh’s parents of demanding a hefty dowry. While Pooja died on Friday, the man was battling for life in hospital.
According to a report the couple checked into a hotel near Ghaziabad railway station around 1.30am on Friday.
Kant and Singh then consumed sulphas, a poisonous substance after their families refused to support their marriage.
Pooja and Subodh had met through a common friend in April this year.
They decided in the first week of July to go ahead with the marriage and planned the wedding for November 19, which was eventually called off.
Even after intervention by the families, both of them kept meeting each other.
The report informs that despite the opposition from their families, Pooja visited Sobodh’s house and told him she wanted to marry him even when the families disapproved the marriage.
According to details by Jai Karan Singh, the SHO of Kotwali police station, neither the girl’s parents nor Subodh’s has lodged any police complaint so far. He said that an inquiry would be done if any complaint is received.
